Earnings Exemptions

Parents on income assistance have to report earnings by all family members on their monthly stub. Any earnings over the earnings exemption amount are deducted from their parent`s income assistance cheque dollar for dollar. Click on the links to learn more about exemption amounts for individuals on Disability (PDF) and Basic Income (PDF).

I would rather my children remain living at home and saved their earnings to put towards a post secondary education, a down payment on a home, or save for their future family just as other youth do whose parents aren’t on income assistance.

Earnings Exemptions for one parent with two children are:

  • $1,200/month, $14,400/year for a family with two adults where only one person has the Persons with Disabilities designation
  • For families with children: $600.00 a month
  • For families with a child with a disability: $700.00 a month
  • For a person in the Persons with Persistent Multiple Barriers category: $700.00 a month

Thinking of moving in together? Think about this…

Youth who live with someone may end up with marriage-like responsibilities if they:

  • live together in a marriage-like relationship for at least two years, or
  • contributed to the child’s support for at least one year during their relationship with the child’s parent.
