Total cost of the new school was $10.1 million, with the provincial government contributing $8.9 million and the federal government contributing $1.2 million. The project created 65 new jobs for the area. The school is on the now vacant site of Rockland Elementary. Only the existing gym was retained after seismic upgrading. The school has a capacity of 100 students from kindergarten to Grade 7.

École Mer-et-montagne was built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold standards. Design features include:

  • Systems to harvest rainwater.
  • Ground source heat pump.
  • Energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems.
