McCreary Centre Society – Results of the 2013 BC Adolescent Health Survey, North Vancouver Island

Annie Smith, Executive Director for the McCreary Centre Society recommends reading the full report because “SD71 makes up over half of that report, so is the main driver of the results.”

On Nov 6, 2011 it was reported “Since January 2009, 17 people in the Comox Valley have committed suicide, an appallingly high number.” Five young persons “have died by suicide. According to the 2008 North Island Adolescent Health Survey conducted by the McCreary Centre Society, suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 12 to 18 in B.C., 13 per cent of youth in the North Island (which includes the Comox Valley) have seriously considered suicide in the past year and seven per cent of students have attempted suicide, which is higher than the provincial average of five per cent (source:http://www.mcs.bc.ca).”
