Very little work has been done on the effect of
particle size specifically on airway mucociliary function,
although limited studies have shown that fine particles
(less than 2.5 µm) are cleared from the lung more slowly
than larger particles, and that submicrometre (< 1.0 µm)
particles clear very slowly indeed, taking more than one
to two years in a few cases, especially in patients with
obstructive lung diseases.
